Why Build a Business

Beyond financial gain, the non-monetary benefits of having a job are largely the same for all individuals, as work fulfills core human psychological and social needs. However, these benefits are often more profound for people with learning difficulties who are moving from unemployment to a job, as they directly counteract the isolation and low self-esteem frequently associated with long-term joblessness.

Walking the Talk

To realize this mission long-term, LDS has established a retail business that will be owned by people with a learning difficulty. The PWD’s work under the supervision of unpaid volunteers.

The business operates by selling preloved items donated by the public, and supplemented by cash donations.

The ultimate objective is to create a sustainable enterprise that provides participants with both a sense of status and a reliable, long-term income.

The Benefits of Having a Job

For both the general population and people with learning difficulties, a job provides essential non-financial

  1. Creates a daily and weekly rhythm, giving a reason to get up, managing time, and providing stability to life.

  2. Provides a regular environment for meeting new people, building friendships and professional networks, and combating social isolation

  3. Contributes to self-definition—"I work in a shop" vs. "I am unemployed"—and offers respect and a recognized place in the community.

  4. Regular achievement of tasks, overcoming challenges, and receiving positive feedback leads to a strong sense of self-worth and capability. A feeling of being productive, making a meaningful contribution to a business or society, and having a goal beyond one's own immediate needs.

  5. Skill Development Continually learning new skills, both job-specific (technical) and 'soft' skills (communication, teamwork, problem-solving.
